United South Broadway Corporation (USBC) is a nonprofit community development organization based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, established in 1986. The organization was founded with the mission of revitalizing historic neighborhoods and enhancing the availability of safe, decent, and affordable housing for low and moderate-income families in the area. In response to the 2007-2008 mortgage crisis, USBC expanded its efforts statewide, offering free legal aid and housing counseling to homeowners facing unfair and unnecessary foreclosures.
USBC's work encompasses several key areas, including fair lending, crime prevention, locally-based commercial development, and community engagement. The organization strongly believes in grassroots movements, where community members recognize and actively engage in addressing local issues.
One of the notable initiatives is the Anti-Racism Training Institute of the Southwest (ARTI), established in 1991. ARTI aims to combat institutional racism by providing workshops that educate community members about the history and structures of racism, fostering a shared understanding and collaboration among diverse groups.
USBC also focuses on youth development through partnerships that offer educational programs, after-school activities, and leadership opportunities. They believe that empowering the next generation is crucial for community prosperity.
Furthermore, USBC is at the forefront of foreclosure prevention, providing expert housing counseling and legal representation to those struggling with mortgage payments. Their programs, recognized for excellence by local accolades, aim to help individuals navigate the complexities of the foreclosure system and maintain homeownership.
Through continuous advocacy, support, and engagement, USBC continues to play a vital role in enhancing the equity and quality of life in Albuquerque's low-wealth neighborhoods, working to ensure that all residents have access to the opportunities and resources they need to thrive.
