Monterey Bay Community Power (MBCP) is a locally-controlled public agency formed to provide clean, carbon-free electricity to the communities of Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz Counties through the Community Choice Energy (CCE) model. Established in March 2017, MBCP aims to deliver electricity beginning in the spring of 2025 by allowing local communities to select renewable energy sources while continuing to rely on Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) for the transmission and delivery of power. In this model, existing PG&E customers will be automatically enrolled into MBCP's program, which will maintain similar rates to PG&E's generation costs while offering a minimum rebate of 3% to customers. MBCP's energy portfolio will focus on renewable sources, excluding nuclear and fossil fuels, thereby promoting environmental sustainability and local economic development. The collaborative efforts that led to MBCP's formation involved multiple local governments, demonstrating a commitment to regional cooperation and public engagement. The agency prioritizes transparency, featuring public board meetings and community advisory councils to ensure that decisions reflect the needs and preferences of the residents it serves.
