Crown Shade Company, based in Baltimore, Maryland, has been a leader in the custom shading solutions market since its establishment in 1969. With roots dating back to the mid-1950s, the company was originally founded by Milton and Marilyn Grodnitzky in the basement of Grody’s Department Store. Initially supplying vinyl and paper window shades to local retailers, Crown Shade quickly expanded, transitioning into a manufacturing and distribution operation after incorporating.
The company has seen significant growth over the decades, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s when it ventured into producing more stylish custom window shades, woven woods, and various types of blinds. Today, it operates out of a state-of-the-art 75,000 square foot facility dedicated to fabricating residential and commercial roller shades for both interior and exterior applications.
Crown Shade takes pride in its legacy of craftsmanship, being one of the few manufacturers of wood spring rollers in North America. They have continually innovated their product offerings, adding cellular shades, window shadings, and custom shutters to their portfolio. More recently, Crown has introduced motorized components, collaborating with Somfy to enhance their roller shade line, and has begun manufacturing specialty shading systems in partnership with UK-based Guthrie Douglas.
